Description

Addressees
King in parliament.
Nature of request
The poor people of Wiggenhall, Ilsington, Tilney, Clenchwarton, Watlington, Runcton Holme, Setchey and West Winch, in the marshland of Norfolk, state that floods have so damaged the river flowing among their vills that the dyke on the one side is completely destroyed and that on the other under great pressure, and they are finding it too expensive to maintain, to the likelihood of their destruction, if they are not helped. They request a commission to lords and other wise and suitable people to oversee this matter, to inform themselves fully on this matter, by inquisition if necessary, and to advise on what to do to save the vills and country, whether by narrowing the channel or in some other manner; and they ask that they might have full power to hear and determine this matter, according to the laws of the land and the usages and customs of the marshland, and to compel and constrain people to contribute, and all other powers held by other commissions de wallis et fossatis; and that this might be done swiftly, and without obstruction from any supersedeas or in any other way.
Nature of endorsement
A commission is to be issued on the matter contained in this bill to the Earl of Suffolk, Lord Willoughby, William de Wychingham and John Hawe, and to three of them of whom William is one; and they are to have power by the same commission to do and accomplish all the things contained in this bill, and to hear and determine the said matter. And it seems to the lords that no supersedeas or anything else which might disturb such a great and necessary thing should be granted on this in the meantime.
