Nature of request
John de Weston makes three points:1) He states that John de Castre, formerly Sheriff of Cumberland, has only paid him part of the wages due for his men in Carlisle castle in the King's fifth and sixth years.2) He states that the esquires and foot soldiers there have not been paid, and asks that some arrangement should be made for their pay and their arrears if they are to remain there. He also requests a letter ordering provision for the castle's needs.3) He lists further arrangements he has made for garrisoning the castle.
Nature of endorsement
Robert de Barton, Bailiff of Penrith and Sowerby, is to be ordered to pay John de Weston, Constable of Carlisle castle, or Richard de Wolreton, his attorney, 100 marks from the issues of his bailiwick, in part payment of their wages and those of others staying with them for the protection of the said castle.
