Description

People of Wainfleet.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The people of Wainfleet quote a writ from the King requesting ships for an expedition to Scotland, and state that a Peter Breton has also come with a commission to find men for military service on land. They ask that this bill might be endorsed, specifying whether the King would prefer them to provide men for service by land or sea, as they wish to serve him but do not have the power to provide both. And if he would like ships, that a writ might be sent to Peter Breton or anyone else with a similar commission, to cease demanding service on land.
Nature of endorsement
Peter's power has been repealed and something else has been ordained.
Places mentioned
Wainfleet, [Lincolnshire]
Scotland
Tynemouth, [Northumberland]
Altofts, [West Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned
Peter Breton.
Note
The writ is dated at Altofts, 5 April 15 Edward II (1322), and the ships are to be at Tynemouth at the octave of Trinity. This petition would therefore seem to date from the spring or early summer of 1322.
