Description
Petitioners
Abbot of Whalley.
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Abbot of Whalley
Nature of request
The Abbot of Whalley states that he has been enfeoffed with various tenements in Cheshire, and that these feoffments have been confirmed by Edward I, but that the community of Cheshire is distraining him to repair the bridge over the River Dee and various other bridges, contrary to his feoffments. He requests a writ to the justice of Chester to do justice to him in this matter.
Nature of endorsement
The Earl of Chester or his justice of Chester is to be ordered that, when he has examined the charters of the aforesaid Abbot, justice is to be done to him on the contents of the petition, so that no further complaint about this reaches the King, for default of justice in this matter.
Places mentioned
Whalley, [Lancashire]
Cheshire
River Dee.
People mentioned
Edward [I], King of England.
Note
Dated on the guard to '? c. 1319' without further explanation. From the content, the petition clearly dates from the reign of Edward II, and this date would agree with the language and the hand. However, similar dates on other petitions have not always been reliable.
