Nature of request
John de Wessington states that the community of the bishopric of Durham sent him to Robert de Bruys as a hostage for money due for a truce, and that he was held for two years after the day on which payment was due because 36 marks remained unpaid, which sum he eventually paid himself to have his liberty. He has tried to raise this sum from the community without success, and requests a letter to the Bishop or his deputy to give him justice and a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
The Bishop is to be ordered that, when he has heard the complaint concerning the contents of the petition, he is to have justice done, so that the King does not hear any further complaint on this matter.
