Reference
SC 8/149/7415
Date
[1322-1323]
Description
Petitioners
Collectors of scutage in Warwickshire.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The collectors in Warwickshire, who have a commission from the King to levy £200 from knights, esquires and other mounted men at arms of the county, except from those who were with the King and his other lieges against the rebels, state that this money cannot be levied from most of these people, because some are too poor to pay, and most were with the King against the rebels, so that if the wealthier among the commons of the county do not assist, this money will not be levied. They are also facing opposition from many people, so that they cannot discover who should pay this sum. They request a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
They are to levy the fine that they made with the King according to the form of the commission made to them, if they wish.
Places mentioned
Warwickshire.
Note
One of a collection of petitions published on pages 387ff of Rot. Parl., vol I., which all seem to date from around 1322. This dating is confirmed by PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337, Rotuli Parliamentorum I, pp. 387-415, which dates these petitions to 15 or 16 Edward II (8 July 1321-7 July 1323). This petition must date from after the rebellion of 1322.
