Reference
SC 8/149/7413
Date
[1313-1327]
Description
Petitioners
William de Waltham.
Name(s)
de Waltham, William
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
William de Waltham states that John de Export, citizen of London, by his testament bequeathed certain tenements in London to found a chantry for himself and for the souls of all the Christians of London, and appointed John Pas and Silvester le Cordewaner as his executors. John Pas, however, refused to allow the testament to be enrolled in the Guildhall, and Silvester le Cordewaner resigned his estate in this matter to William. As John de Export has no heir of the blood, the King can do as he wishes with his tenements. William asks him to grant the tenements to sustain this chantry, for a certain annual rent to be paid to the King.
Nature of endorsement
The Escheator is to be ordered to inquire into the contents of the petition, and more fully into the truth of the whole matter; and into whether those tenements are in the King's hand or another's; and if in the King's hand, then why and how and in what way; and if in another's, then why and how and in what way; and the inquisition is to be returned in Chancery, so that the King may further do what seems to him to be done.
Places mentioned
London.
People mentioned
John de Export, citizen of London
John Pas
Silvester le Cordewaner (Cordwainer)
Robert de Wynchelse (Winchelsey, Winchelsea), Archbishop of Canterbury
[Edward I], King of England.
Note
The petition states that Silvester le Cordewaner resigned his estate in this matter to William de Waltham before Robert de Winchelsey, formerly Archbishop of Canterbury. Winchelsey died in May 1313, so the petition would seem to date from between then and the end of Edward II's reign.
