Name(s)
de Went, Henry
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Henry de Went and other poor people of Marston in Herefordshire state that they held certain tenements in Marston from Roger de Leye, a bastard, for the sum of 5s annually for all services, and that Roger held these 5s of the King in chief, but that after his death the Escheator of Hereford entered, and distrained them to pay 21s annually. They sued a writ of Chancery to the present Escheator to inquire into how Roger held, and the inquisition has been returned in Chancery, and the Chancellor has ordered them to sue by petition in parliament. They ask that it might be examined and a remedy provided in accordance with its verdict.

The inquisitions are to be examined before the council.
Places mentioned
Marston, Herefordshire.
People mentioned
Roger de Leye.
Note
From the hand and from the Latin endorsement, most probably from the reign of Edward II or from early in the reign of Edward III. The mention of an Escheator of Herefordshire suggests that it dates from between 1324 and 1327, when the counties had separate escheators.
