Description
Petitioners
Abbot of Whalley.
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Abbot of Whalley
Nature of request
The Abbot of Whalley states that Alice, widow of John, son of Ralph de Holden, has brought a writ of appeal in Yorkshire against him and others for the death of her husband - of which he is not guilty, since he is 90 years old and more, as will be attested by many at the present parliament. The writ is returnable now, at the octave of Trinity, and if he does not appear in person, and lay people are selected, he will lose the goods of his house. He asks, in consideration of the fact that he is too old and infirm to travel, that he might have an attorney in this case, or that some other remedy might be provided.

Note
John, son of Ralph de Holden was alive on 6 July 1375, when an order went out to arrest him (CPR 1374-7 pp.158-159), and John Sotheren is pardoned for his death on 1 February 1377 (CPR 1374-7 p.422), which gives a rough date range for the petition. According to the note on the guard, the number 'xlix' written in a contemporary hand on the dorse corresponds to the equivalent entry on the fragmentary list of petitions probably for the 1376 parliament, now at C 49/43/10; that document is now too badly damaged and incomplete to verify this conclusively, although that entry certainly relates to a petition from an abbot.
