Description
Petitioners
Abbess and convent of Wilton.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Abbess and convent of Wilton state that they hold certain lands of the King for the service of finding a knight to fight in wars in Wales and Scotland every time the common summons is made, and that they performed this service in the time of the King's grandfather and father, but that now, in the King's fourth year, at Berwick upon Tweed, the King's marshals demanded two knights from them, and exacted this service from them by force. They ask that this might be redressed in the Exchequer so that they are not disinherited in future.
Nature of endorsement
She is to have a writ of the great seal to the Treasurer's lieutenant and the Barons of the Exchequer, to have the rolls of the Exchequer from the time of King Henry and King Edward, the father, searched, and to inform the King of what they find concerning the said service.
Places mentioned
Wilton, [Wiltshire]
Wales
Scotland
Berwick-upon-Tweed, [Northumberland].
People mentioned
Henry [III], King of England
Edward [I], King of England.
Note
The exactions complained of took place in 4 Edward II (8 July 1310-7 July 1311): this petition probably dates from shortly afterwards (although it is of course possible that the petitioners may be complaining some years after the event).
