Description
Petitioners
Brothers of the Hospital of St Nicholas of York.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Brothers of the Hospital of St Nicholas of York state that they had various alms from lands in Holderness by the charters of the Earls of Aumale and others, but that these have been withheld since the lands of the Earls came into the King's hand, leading to their impoverishment. They ask that they might be paid.
Nature of endorsement
The Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer are to be ordered by writ of Chancery that, when they have summoned the Bailiff of Holderness before them, they are to examine the charters of the complainants and inform themselves about the seisin; and justice is to be done.
Places mentioned
York
Holderness, [East Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned
William, [Count of] Aumale
Herbert de Seint Quintyn (St Quentin)
Ralph, Count of Aumale.
Note
The lands of the Counts of Aumale came into the King's hand in 1274. From the hand, this petition is clearly rather later, probably from the reign of Edward II, but possibly from the later years of Edward I.
