Description
Petitioners
Nicholas Watyes.
Name(s)
Watyes, Nicholas
Addressees
King and other lords of parliament.
Nature of request
Nicholas Watyes states that he was impleaded in Worcester by one Thomas Botheby, chantry chaplain at the altar of Our Lady in the church of St Helen, Worcester, concerning 8s. of rent that Thomas claimed Nicholas owed him for a messuage, which Nicholas claims to be held of the King in socage, and that, through the maintenance of Thomas Belle, then one of the Bailiffs of Worcester, the assize went against him. He sued a writ of error before William Gascoigne, and his companions, justices of King's Bench, but Thomas Belle managed to substitute a false record for the true one, and so he can have no remedy. He requests a remedy in the present parliament if possible, and if it is not, that the matter might be entrusted to the Chancellor, justices and others of the council to be assigned to this, to examine the record by questioning Richard Oseney, formerly clerk of Worcester, and by other means which seem good, and to do justice and punish this forgery.
Nature of endorsement
This petition is to be sent to the Chancellor, and the same Chancellor, summoning the justices, is to have power and authority of parliament to summon before him both the parties and the clerks and others who are to be summoned in this matter, and to examine them on it, and to do justice to them, and also to punish those who seem to them to be punishable in this case, according to the discretions of the aforesaid Chancellor and justices. And be it remembered that on Tuesday, the eve of the Purification of Our Lady, in the present King's eighth year, a day was given to the parties to appear in Chancery a month after the following Easter.
