Nature of request
The petition asks that the wardens of the vills, places and bounds [charged with the upkeep of the old bridge of Rochester] might be established in perpetuity to oversee the new bridge; that they might be chosen by the said vills, places and bounds when necessary; that they might be able to purchase lands and tenements to the value of £200 as was previously granted by the King; that they might render their account annually before certain auditors chosen by the said vills, places and bounds; that John de Cobeham might found a chantry for three chaplains in a chapel newly made at the end of the bridge; and that the revenue from the £200 might be spent on the bridge and chaplains according to the ordinance of John de Cobeham.
