Description
Petitioners
William de Wygan (Wigan) of Preston.
Name(s)
de Wygan (Wigan), William
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
William de Wygan of Preston states that Henry, son of Roger de Cliderhou, had him, together with Fulk Tocheson of Walton, Peter le Taillour of Preston and John de Whallay, appealed in the county of Middlesex for the death of a Roger le Mercer, allegedly by Roger's son John: although, as far as he and the others know, John and Roger never existed. Process continued until they were outlawed, while they were in Lancashire all this time and knew nothing. After the outlawry, Henry came by night to the house of Peter le Taillour and beheaded him, and has since sought to kill William and the others, so that they have fled the country. They request a remedy for this malevolence, so that others in future might be discouraged from doing such things.
Nature of endorsement
Because it is supposed by the petition that those who request a remedy are outlawed, the King can give them no remedy while they are outside the law.
