William de Wydeslade, merchant of London.
Name(s)
de Wydeslade, William
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
merchant of London
Nature of request
[This petition is damaged] William de Wydeslade, merchant of London, states that because his merchandise was stolen at sea by men of Almaine, he was granted a writ to the Sheriffs of London to arrest goods of merchants of Almaine to the value; and thus he sued for two years and more. But the people whose goods were taken complained, falsely, that they are not of the country against which the arrest was awarded, because of which, and their bribes, they had writs to the Sheriffs to take the goods delivered to William back into the King's hand, and a day was appointed to hear this case before the council: when the merchants gave no reasons, but through bribery recovered their goods on mainprise. After a long suit William again obtained execution against the merchants and damages of £200. Writs of execution have often been sent to the Sheriffs of London and Lincolnshire for this, and letters of the privy seal in the time of the King's father, but nothing has been done, again because of bribery. And recently, at the King's first parliament, execution was again commanded, but still nothing has been done. He requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
[Coram] magno consilio.[It seems to] the council that there was an error in the damages lately awarded, and therefore there is to be no [execution] of this.
