Nature of request
Edmund White states that he was a prisoner of the French until his brother, John Whyte, offered himself as a hostage in his place; and the King of France then gave Edmund letters of safe conduct for a year to bring a ship filled with merchandise to France to sell to pay his ransom and that of other English prisoners, returning with French merchandise. He requests permission to take such a ship, filled with merchandise other than arms and food, to France, and to buy merchandise there to bring back to England.
Nature of endorsement
On 12 February in the eighth year etc., in the presence in the council of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Chancellor, the Bishops of London, Winchester and Durham, the Earl of Somerset, the Treasurer, the Keeper of the Privy Seal, the Steward and the Chamberlain, it was agreed that the supplicant can charge such a vessel as set out in the petition, with any merchandise except armour, armaments, food and merchandise pertaining to the staple.
