Description
Petitioners
Burgesses of Winchester, living near the West Port.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The burgesses of Winchester living near the West Port state that the King's progenitors have appointed certain places for the various fairs and markets within the city, which they have always occupied, until two years ago, when some of the great people of the city moved the strangers' fish fair and market to a new location, where it causes great harm to the King and his castle, and to the burgesses and the city. They ask that the Sheriff of Hampshire, or a justice, or a clerk or someone else might be appointed to inquire into this removal, and to put the fair and market back in their former place. They state that they have complained before, and that letters of the privy seal have been sent to the Mayor and community, but that nothing has been done.
Nature of endorsement
The Mayor and bailiffs of Winchester are to be ordered that if things have been moved to the harm of the said people, and otherwise than they used to be, then they are to have the said things put back where they used to be. And there is to be a process by sicut alias cum pluries and attachment.
Places mentioned
Winchester, Hampshire.
Note
Tentatively dated on the basis of the hand and the French endorsement. Probably from the early years of Edward III.
