Date

Description
Petitioners
Rigaud de Assier, Bishop of Winchester.
Name(s)
de Assier, Rigaud
Addressees
King.
Occupation
Bishop of Winchester
Nature of request
The Bishop of Winchester makes five requests:1) He states that John de Sandale, his predecessor, received in full the implements belonging to the bishopric in terms of livestock, but that his executors are withholding 1100 oxen from him. He asks that they might be delivered to him, and not withheld by reason of the debt John owed the King, because they are part of the bishopric and not John's private property.2) He asks that the fleeces shorn from the sheep that are part of the implement of the bishopric, after he was received by the King to the bishopric and its temporalities, and which are being withheld in the King's name by the keepers of the bishopric, might be handed over to him, or the price allowed in the debt he owes the King.3) He asks that he might recover and have execution, by writ or otherwise, of the fruits and other goods received from the bishopric in the name of the late Bishop, up to the valuation of the various houses and manors of the bishopric, and that the prohibition which is preventing his suit for these might be repealed.4) He requests respite from the debt he owes the King until the quinzaine of Michaelmas, as he is in the King's service at his own expense.5) He states that the protection granted to him and his men lasts only until Trinity, by when he will not be back in England. He asks that it might be extended until All Saints, provided that he remains out of the realm, and that he might have a general attorney for that period.
Nature of endorsement
With regard to the first three points, a writ is to be sent to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer to proceed in the process which is before them and the council on these things, and to do justice graciously; saving always the King's right. With regard to the respite from the debt: at the King's will. With regard to the protections and general attorneys: it is to be done.
People mentioned
John de Sandale, Bishop of Winchester.
Note
Dated to 1320-1323, when Rigaud de Assier was Bishop of Winchester. CPR 1317-21 p.560 is dated 18 February 1321: the protection is to Whitsun, rather than Trinity, but this is quite possibly the period of absence referred to here.
