Description
Petitioners
Tenants and bondmen of Withernsea and Owthorne.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The tenants and bondmen of Withernsea and Owthorne, which are part of the manor of Burstwick, state that Philip de Meaux had John de Thwait, formerly bailiff of Burstwick, expel them from part of their lands, of which they and their ancestors had always been seised, and lease it to him; and that by colour of this lease he impounds their animals on their common land, and commits other wrongs against them, so that they cannot have profit from their lands or use their common land. And because they have complained of this, he has petitioned the King to have the lands he now holds and their other lands in demesne, to their destruction and to great loss to the King. They ask that this petition might not be granted, without them having right of response.
Nature of endorsement
The Bailiff of the manor of Burstwick is to be ordered that, when he has heard the complaint of the tenants and bondmen concerning the wrongs and grievances contained here, and when he has called those who are to be called, he is to give them redress and ouster.
