Nature of request
The community of the Isle of Wight state that the collectors of scutage for the King's fourth year in Hampshire are distraining them to pay this, although they have never paid scutage at any time. They ask that they might be able to hold their lands and tenements by the customary services, as they always have.
Nature of endorsement
A writ is to be sent to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer, or to their lieutenants, concerning the contents of the petition, that, if they can establish that the petition contains the truth, then they are to have the tenants of the Isle excused of scutage, and distrain etc.

CChR 1300-26 p.202 is dated 2 December 1312: as the petitioners refer to the Earl of Chester as lord of the Isle, this petition must date from between then and the end of Edward II's reign.
