Description
Petitioners
Henry Woodlock, Bishop of Winchester.
Name(s)
Woodlock, Henry
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Bishop of Winchester
Nature of request
Henry, Bishop of Winchester, states that the King brought a quare impedit against him in Cambridgeshire concerning the advowson of Steeple Morden, although he and his ancestors never had any estate in the advowson except during vacancies in the bishopric, and that the King has now presented his clerk, Bertrand Ferraund, to this church, delaying the plea, so that the Bishop can have no execution. And the fruits of the church have been sequestrated at the King's command and are in the keeping of the Sheriff or in other lay hands, to the prejudice of Holy Church. The bishop asks that Roger de Brabanzon and his companions, before whom the plea is, might be ordered to proceed in the plea without further delay.
Nature of endorsement
Because the charter of King Edward, the present King's father was shown before the great council, stating that the King remised and quitclaimed for himself and his heirs to John, Bishop of Winchester, predecessor of Henry the present Bishop, and his successors, all right and claim that he had or could have in the advowson of the church of Steeple Morden by Cambridge, and also the advowsons of various other churches contained in that charter, and granted these advowsons to John and his successors, to have and to hold of the same King and his heirs in perpetuity, therefore Roger de Brabanzon and his companions are to be ordered that, when they have seen that charter, they are to proceed immediately in this suit and do full justice to the present Bishop.
