SC 8/146/7277
Date
[1388]
Description
Petitioners
Dean and canons of the College of Westminster.
Addressees
King and lords of parliament.
Nature of request
The Dean and canons of the College of Westminster state that Edward III granted certain lands, tenements and other possessions to various people, for them to enfeoff the Dean and canons with them, so that after forty years they would be amortized to them. But Simon de Burele, by means of false claims, obtained letters patent stating that the King had granted these lands, tenements and possessions to him, and so expelled the Dean and canons: and these lands, tenements and possessions are now in the King's hand because of Simon's forfeiture. They ask that these things might be restored to them, and that they might be amortized to them, without paying fine or fee.
Nature of endorsement
They are to sue to the council; and the King wills that the council should have power to do, and should do, justice to the supplicants on the matter contained within.

Note
CPR 1385-9::p.539 is dated 2 October 1388, and is clearly the result of the petition. Rot. Parl. vol. III, pp.178b-179a (no.15), assigns this petition to 7 Richard II (22 June 1383-21 June 1384), although from the content it must date from after the forfeiture of Simon de Burley.
