Description
Petitioners
William Herbert, Prior of Ware.
Name(s)
Herbert, William
Addressees
King and lords of parliament.
Occupation
Prior of Ware
Nature of request
The Prior of Ware states that the King, at the request of his late mother, granted the priory to the Prior at farm for term of life, during the wars, with the clause that he was not to be expelled during his lifetime, as can be seen in the letters patent for the grant. The King has now granted the priory to John Golofre, knight of his chamber, for the same farm that the Prior now pays, to the Prior's ruin and contrary to the first grant. He asks that his estate might be clarified in the present parliament.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Ware, [Hertfordshire].
People mentioned
Joan of Kent, Princess of Wales
John Golofre, knight of the King's chamber.
Note
This petition must date from after the death of Joan of Kent in 1285, but probably from before the grant of the priory to the Friars of King's Langley on 13 September 1386 (CPR 1385-9 p.213), since this is not mentioned. CPR 1381-5 p.13 is dated 20 May 1381.
