Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of Vale Royal.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The Abbot and convent of Vale Royal make six requests:1) They ask that the executors of John de Berewik might be ordered to pay them the arrears of a sum devised to them by the King's mother for work on the abbey and to found a chantry there; and that they might be able to use this money to buy lands and tenements to the value of £20 annually to support the chantry, as the Queen wished.2) They ask that the money from fines from indictments in eyres against the Abbot and convent or the people of their fees might be put towards the work on the abbey.3) They ask that they might have the mills and fishery of [Chester] bridge after the death of Richard Lenginnour, who holds them for term of life, paying what he does.4) They ask for some convenient form of payment for the arrears of the money granted to them by Edward I for work on their abbey.5) They request the fishery of Hatch Mere in Delamere Forest.6) They ask that they might be able to move the house where they make glass for their abbey, as they burn alder-wood for the glass, and the burning of such dead wood would not harm the King; and because they can only pay their workmen in glass, they request permission to do so.
Nature of endorsement
With regard to the first petition: the testament of lady Eleanor, formerly Queen of England, is to be examined, and likewise the account of John de Berewik, so that from inspection of the testament it might be clear whether she bequeathed the said sum to them or not, and from inspection of the account what and how much of the sum mentioned in the petition has been paid to the said Abbot and convent. And it is further to be seen how much money John de Berewik owed the King on the day he died; and then they are to wait until the King has levied from John's goods the money that he owed the King on the aforesaid day, as has been said above. With regard to the second: the King is to do his will, but it does not seem to the council that it is to be done in the form requested. With regard to the third petition: he is to wait for the death of the present farmer, if it please the King. With regard to the fourth: if it please the King it can be done. With regard to the fifth: the Justice of Chester is to be ordered to inquire if it is to the harm or prejudice of the King or of anyone else if the King grants the said fishery to them, and how much it is worth annually etc; and he is to inform the King. With regard to the sixth: the Justice of Chester is to be ordered to inquire if it is to the harm etc. and to what harm etc., and he is to inform the King.
