Reference
SC 8/145/7237
Date
[? 1450-? 1453]
Description
Petitioners
Gervase le Vulre, Secretary for France.
Name(s)
Vulre, Gervase
Addressees
King.
Places mentioned
France
Paris, [France]
Southampton, [Hampshire].
Nature of request
Gervase le Vulre asks that for his thirty-two years' good service the annuity granted him from the great and little customs in the port of Southampton, which is small enough for the expenses he has to sustain, might be exempted from the current act of resumption, and might be confirmed in the present parliament.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] It is thought by the lords that the grant made to master Gervase by the King of £80 annually, having consideration of his service [missing due to damage to ms] by the act of resumption, but they will not affirm this grant by authority of parliament.[None on dorse].
Note
If SC 8/29/1414 can be dated to 1461, and refers to the petitioner's forty years and more of service, this petition, which refers to thirty-two years service and more, would seem to date from c. 1453. There is no Act of Resumption enrolled on the roll of the parliament of that year, although the commons petition about exemptions from acts of resumption, and there are a couple of petitions referring to the customs of Southampton. An annuity to Gervase le Vulre of £80 annually is exempted from the act of resumption in the parliament of 1450 (Rot. Parl. vol. V, p.187a). The petition would appear to date to the early years of the 1450s.
