Nature of request

Theobald de Verdun states that the liberty of Meath, once held by Walter de Lascy, Lord of Meath, was taken into the King's hand without judgment for irregularities in an appeal of felony, in such a way that all the pleas of the crown afterwards remained in the King's hand, and the county with all pleas pertaining to the Sheriff remained to Walter de Lascy and his heirs, until after Walter's death, when the land was divided between Walter's daughters and their husbands, Geoffrey de Geyneville and John de Verdun. Then Henry III gave Geoffrey his share in full, but kept the pleas of the crown for John's share in his own hand. And this remained the case until last Easter, in the King's seventh year, when the Justiciar of Ireland seized this share, now Theobald's, into the King's hand again, without judgement. He requests justice in the matter of both seizures.
