Description
Petitioners
Philip la Vache.
Name(s)
Vache, Philip
Addressees
Council.
Nature of request
[Part of the right-hand side of this petition is missing]Philip la Vache states that Richard II granted him all the tenths from the county of Guînes when he was constable of the castle there, but that Thomas Stanley and John Bernard, Treasurers of Calais, have deducted from his account the tenths of Coquelles, Caloinote, and Osterwyk, [saying that they are not in the county]. He asks that the Keeper of the Privy Seal might be ordered to address sufficient letters to Thomas and John, ordering them [to allow him this money], or that an inquiry might be held into whether these places are in the county or not, so that the council, informed on this, might send letters to allow the money as above.
Nature of endorsement
On 27 June in the first year etc. the council assented that a commission under the great seal should be made in accordance with this bill.
Places mentioned
Guînes, [France]
Calkwell (Coquelles), [Artois, France]
Caloinote [unidentified], [Artois, France]
Osterwyk [unidentified], [Artois, France].
People mentioned
Richard [II], King of England
Thomas Stanley, Treasurer of Calais
John Bernard, Treasurer of Calais.
Note
From the endorsement, this petition was answered on 27 June, 1 Henry IV (1400). A later grant (CPR 1399-1401, p. 526) also relates to the tenths of these places. Caloinote is identified in the index to CPR 1399-1401 as Calinottes, but this cannot be located. Like Coquelles, the others are probably villages or areas on the outskirts of Calais.
