Description
Petitioners
People of Upsettlington West (Ladykirk).
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The people of Upsettlington West state that their vill had been part of the realm of England and annexed to the crown of that country since time immemorial, and the writs of the Bishop of Durham have run there, and the King's writs in time of vacancy, and no Bishop has done homage or performed any services to the King of Scotland for it, but that now, because it is on the northern bank of the River Tweed it is in the hands of the Scots, who do not wish to give it up according to the terms of the truce. They also state that whereas in the past the lords of Berwick had ferries crossing to Tweedmouth and the lords of Tweedmouth ferries crossing to Berwick, the Scots are now claiming the entire River Tweed, landing on the English side with their boats and refusing to allow English boats to land on their side. The Keepers of the Truce are not remedying this, so they ask the King to provide a remedy, to maintain the right of his crown.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] Until we think that these things should be challenged.[On dorse] The Keepers of the Truce are to be ordered, by a writ containing the effect of the petition, to preserve the King's right by all the good means they can; and if there is a disturbance they are to inform the King swiftly.
Places mentioned
Upsettlington West (Ladykirk), [Berwickshire, Scotland]
Norham, [Northumberland]
Bishopric of Durham

Tweedmouth, [Northumberland]
Berwick-upon-Tweed, [Northumberland]
Scotland.
Note
Dated tentatively to 1330-1331, with reference to Bain, vol. III, no.1022, which makes a tentative dating to January 1330-1331, and to CCR 1330-3 p.283, a letter to David II of Scotland, dated 3 February 1331, asking him to prevent the Earl of March from hindering the Bishop of Durham from having possession of the town. However, a note on the guard also points out that the reference to the Keepers of the Truce would be more in accordance with an earlier date, and makes a tentative suggestion of c. 1324.
