Nature of request
[This petition is damaged] Thomas, Abbot of Vale Royal, states that he owes annual suit for the church of Llanbadarn-fawr, and other possessions in Carmarthenshire and Cardiganshire, at the King's sessions, in person or by attorney, but that those holding the sessions often insist on him attending in person - which means a long journey from his monastery. Also, at the last sessions at Cardigan he and his men were assaulted by certain Welshmen, falsely imprisoned and indicted, and kept in prison until he had made fine to the King. He asks the commons to ask the King to ordain, by the assent of the lords, that in future Abbots might be able to appear in these sessions by attorneys, without any fine or penalty for non-appearance being exacted. He also asks that if any presentment for felony or treason is made against the Abbot at any other petty session or court, resulting in a warrant for arrest or distraint, this warrant should be returnable at the next great session of these courts, when open proclamation should be made of the indictment or presentment, so that the Abbot can answer it at the next great session.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] Let it be sent to the lords.[On dorse] The King, with regard to the appointment of the attorney, as specified in the petition, and the receiving of the same attorney as specified in the petition, agrees that it is to be as is desired, provided that the matter for which the attorney may be made or received does not extent to felony or to treason; and with regard to the proclamation made in the county courts of Carmarthen and Cardigan the King wishes that before the Abbot of Vale Royal, whoever he is, is outlawed, proclamation should be made in these shires, or one of them as the case requires, at three of the last full county courts before outlawry is pronounced. And with regard to the rest of the petition, the King will be advised.
