Description
Petitioners
Sub-prior and convent of St Martin, Dover.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Sub-prior and convent of St Martin, Dover, state that although by the terms of the charter of Henry II, they are exempt from any jurisdiction except that of the Archbishop of Canterbury, during the last vacancy, after the death of Robert de Winchelsey, the Prior of Holy Trinity attempted to exercise jurisdiction over them. The Prior complained to the King about this impairment of his crown and dignity, and the King sent a writ of prohibition to the Prior of Holy Trinity. He ignored it, however, and excommunicated the prior and officers, put their churches under interdict, and sequestrated their goods and benefices. He then arranged for the new Archbishop to put this sentence into execution, and now, during a vacancy in the Priory, will not let the monks have their Prior. They request a remedy.
