William de Thorntoft.
Name(s)
de Thorntoft, William
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
William de Thorntoft states that one of his ancestors purchased a water-mill called 'Dauncecole' in the vill of North Cave, which had once been charged with an annual rent of 6 shillings to the Templars, to perform certain alms, but this rent had been extinguished and in his hand as lord and tenant when the Templars were suppressed. However, Geoffrey de Edenham, Keeper of the manor of Faxfleet, which was formerly the Templars', and which is in the King's hand because of the forfeiture of John de Moubray, is distraining for that rent: although the mill was never held of John de Moubray, nor was John seised of the rent during his lifetime, nor did he claim it, nor is the mill held of him, or of the fee of the Templars, or dependant in any way on the manor of Faxfleet. He requests a writ to Geoffrey, to cease from these distraints.

Coram magno consilio. This bill cannot be answered yet, because it concerns the tenements of the Templars.
