Description
Petitioners
Emma de Tesdale (Teesdale), widow of Alan de Tesdale (Teesdale).
Name(s)
de Tesdale (Teesdale), Emma
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Emma, widow of Alan de Tesdale, states that John de Bailol, formerly lord of Barnard Castle, gave her late husband and heirs a rent of £10 in Longnewton, of which he was seised in his demesne as of fee; but that, as the castle and honour are in the King's hand because of the minority of the Earl of Warwick's heir, she cannot have a writ of dower against him. She requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
The keeper of the castle of Barnard Castle is to be ordered to inform himself on the contents of the petition as fully as he can, and whether Alan her husband died seised of that rent in his demesne as of fee, so that his wife should be dowered from it, or whether the Earl of Warwick died seised of it, on account of whose death that rent was taken into the King's hand, and into all articles etc.; and that information is to be sent into Chancery, so that the King might further do what is rightly to be done. And he is to provide information on the whole truth of the matter.
