Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/144/7190
Date
[1327]
Description
Petitioners
Nicholas de Tweng (Thwing, Thweng), son of Lucy de Tweng.
Name(s)
de Tweng (Thwing, Thweng), Nicholas
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The petitioner states that Nicholas de Huntercoumbe gave half of Cheviot, which is held of the King in chief, to Nicholas de Meinill, so that it would pass to the petitioner and the heirs of his body after Nicholas de Meinill's death; but now, after Nicholas' death, the lands have been taken into the King's hand because Nicholas de Huntercoumbe did not ask permission to do this. Nicholas asks that he might make a reasonable fine in Chancery or before the council to have these lands, as has been done in similar cases, as it has been found by inquest that this can be done without harm to the King or to anyone else.
Nature of endorsement
Coram magno consilio. It seems to the council that it is to be done by a fine in Chancery, if it is not a barony or part of a barony.
Places mentioned
Chivyot (Cheviot Forest), [Northumberland].
People mentioned
Lucy de Tweng (Thwing, Thweng)
Nicholas de Huntercoumbe (Huntercombe)
Nicholas de Menill (Meinill, Meynell).
Note
CPR 1327-30 p.8 is dated 6 February 1327, and is clearly in response to this petition. The land formed part of the barony of Muschamp, the reversion to part of which was bought by Nicholas de Meinill in 1315. For details of the transactions concerned, see Complete Peerage, VIII, p.629.
