Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/144/7160
Date
[? 1394-? 1397]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot of Tintern.
Addressees
King and council in parliament.
Occupation
Abbot of Tintern
Nature of request
The Abbot of Tintern states that as the result of his suit in the last parliament, the King granted him respite until the next parliament from the sums demanded from him from the time when he was collector of the tenths granted to the King by the clergy of the diocese of Llandaff. And it was decided that the Bishop of Llandaff would have letters under the privy seal to give the names of those excommunicated [for non-payment] to the lords of the franchises where they live, or have benefices or possessions, together with the sums due from them, and to levy these sums; and that letters would also be sent to the lords to levy these sums. The Bishop is mortally ill, and has not been able to do anything. The Abbot requests respite until the next parliament, and that some remedy might be ordained in the meantime.
Nature of endorsement
The King, of his special grace, and with the assent of his council in this present parliament, has granted the petitioner respite from the sums demanded of him until the next parliament. And the King wills that his council ordain some suitable remedy for the levying of the same sums in the meantime.
Places mentioned
Tintern, [Monmouthshire, Wales]
Llandaff diocese, Wales.
Note
This petition clearly follows on from SC 8/143/7127, whose response includes the sending of the names of the excommunicate by the Bishop of Llandaff. If that petition was from the parliament of 1395, this one would be from the parliament of January 1397, and the mention of the bishop's mortal illness would refer to the death of Bishop Andrew Barret in April 1396. On the other hand, if that petition was from the parliament of January 1393, this one would be from that of January 1394, and the bishop would be Edmund Bromfield, who died in June 1393. Since it is not known how either of these bishops died, it is not possible to date the petition more precisely. The dates given to both these petitions by Petitions Relating to Wales are mistaken.
