Reference
SC 8/144/7156
Date
[1307-1327]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot of Tironneau.
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Abbot of Tironneau
Nature of request
The Abbot of Tironneau states that Richard I granted him and his house 20 marks annually, to pray for him and his heirs, and that this sum was paid until Edward I seized the lands of aliens into his hand in his twenty-second year, because of the war between him and the King of France. The Abbot asks that the Treasurer and Chamberlains of the Exchequer might be ordered that, if they can find that this sum has been paid, it should be paid again, together with the arrears since peace was declared. He further states that Edward I gave orders that this sum was to be paid again, but died before they could be carried out.
Nature of endorsement
He is to show the charter he has for this in Chancery, and, when the charter has been examined, the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer are to be ordered to search the rolls and memoranda there, to see if the aforesaid 20 marks annually were paid to the Abbot of the same place as is contained in the same bill, and why the payment stopped and when; and they are to inform the King of this.
Places mentioned
Tironneau, [Normandy, France].
People mentioned
Richard [I], King of England
Edward [I], King of England
[Philip IV], King of France
[Walter Langton], Bishop of Chester (Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield) and Treasurer of England.
Note
From the references to the King's father, this petition must date from the reign of Edward II. It was clearly unsuccessful: CCR 1330-3 p.106 is dated 18 January 1331, and is in response to a similar petition to Edward III.
