Description
Petitioners
People of Teviotdale.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The people of Teviotdale state that when they surrendered Roxburgh castle to the Earl of Angus, Lord Percy and Lord Neville after the battle of Durham (Neville's Cross), on the orders of David Bruys, the Earl and Lords swore that they could keep the laws, customs and usages they had enjoyed under King Alexander; and this was confirmed by the King. But they complain that the council later decided to give half their inheritances and rents in Teviotdale to the Scots, without giving them any compensation, and that they suffer greatly from robberies, murders and lawlessness, both by Scots and by the King's lieges, for lack of a Warden of the March. They request a remedy and succour, so that they can live in peace, and be well governed under their laws by a good Sheriff of Roxburghshire.
