Date

Description
Petitioners
Fishermen in the River Thames.
Addressees
[Humphrey of Lancaster], Duke of Gloucester, Guardian of England, and the lords of parliament.
Nature of request
The fishermen in the River Thames complain that the use of trawl-nets and fishing-weirs is destroying the young salmon, trout, mullet, and other fish in the river, so that they can no longer supply fish to London so cheaply; and that these nets and weirs are also hazardous to shipping. They ask that the Mayor of London might be ordered to search the river within the franchise of London for such next and weirs, and to destroy any he finds; and to imprison anyone who uses such things in future.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] Delivered by the Bishop of Norwich. Read on the eighth day of parliament.[None on dorse]
Places mentioned
River Thames
London.
People mentioned
[John Wakeryng], Bishop of Norwich.
Note
Probably datable to the parliament of 1420, presided over by the Duke of Gloucester in his brother's absence, rather than to any parliament in the reign of Henry VI, by the very similar SC 8/144/7167, presented to the parliament of May 1421, which states that petitions were made on the same subject to previous parliaments.
