Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/143/7136
Date
[1380]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot of Tintern.
Addressees
King and council in parliament.
Occupation
Abbot of Tintern
Nature of request
The Abbot of Tintern states that he was appointed collector of the tenth lately granted to Edward III in the diocese of Llandaff, states that certain sums are in arrears from various abbots, which cannot be collected by censure of Holy Church because the abbeys are outside the jurisdiction of ordinaries, nor by the King's writ because they are in a region where the King's writ does not run. The King, at the request of the petitioner, has often written to these lords to have the monies collected, but nothing has been done, and the Abbot is being distrained in his lands and tenements in England for this money. He asks to be discharged of these sums, as he has been before in a similar case, to avoid the ruin of his house.
Nature of endorsement
Because it has been found in on record the Exchequer that the petitioner has previously been discharged in the Exchequer of the levy and collection of the tenths granted for the same abbeys, when he was collector, because of exemption and for the other reasons mentioned above, it is agreed that he is to have a similar discharge now for the sums mentioned from the three abbeys, of the King's grace, for the same reasons, and he is to have a writ to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer to discharge him as before, charging the Abbeys of Margam, Llantarnam and Neath, each with the sum due from it for the aforesaid triennial tenth.
