Nature of request
Gilbert Tiler states that around five years ago Giles Laurence, John Laurence and Adam Hattherst of Kent, abducted his wife and his goods and chattels, and are still holding them, and, although he has sued against them, they are maintained by Walter Culpeper and John Culpeper, and have threatened him with life and limb and attacked him, although he has the King's protection, and also one John atte Mote, who testified for him, and John and Walter Culpeper have brought an indictment against him to delay his suit. One John Semyng, whom Gilbert outlawed, has also threatened him. He requests a remedy, and that the pledges of the malefactors to keep the peace might be levied.

From the mention of April 1380, and of the late Archbishop of Canterbury, who would seem to be Simon Sudbury, who died in June 1381, this petition appears to date from c. 1381.Henry Apulderfeld was Sheriff of Kent between 26 October 1376 and 26 November 1377, and Thomas de Cobeham was Sheriff of Kent between then and 25 November 1378.CCR 1385-9 p.84 is dated 24 June 1385, p.424 is dated 22 July 1387, and pp.437-8 is dated 14 July 1387.
