Date
[c. 1377]
Description
Petitioners
Clothworkers of London.
Addressees
King in parliament.
Nature of request
The clothworkers of London state that of the gift and grant of the King's progenitors they have long has a guild with certain franchises and privileges, for which they pay a certain sum annually, and which forbids anyone else to use their craft, but that lately weavers from Flanders, Brabant, and elsewhere have settled in London, and in the reign of Edward III they purchased a charter, which is completely contrary to the privileges of their guild. They ask that the charter of their guild might be confirmed, and that of the aliens repealed; or that they might be discharged from their annual payment.
Nature of endorsement
This bill has been answered elsewhere.
Places mentioned
London
Southwark, [Surrey]
Flanders
Brabant.
People mentioned
Edward [III], King of England.
Note
From the mention of the King's grandfather, this petition would seem to date from the beginning of the reign of Richard II. SC 8/43/2127 does not have this reference: is this accidental, or is it from the reign of Edward III.
