SC 8/143/7127
Date

Description
Petitioners
Abbot of Tintern.
Addressees
King and council in parliament.
Occupation
Abbot of Tintern
Nature of request
The Abbot of Tintern states that he has been appointed collector of the tenths in the diocese of Llandaff on all occasions when tenths were granted by the clergy in the last seven years and more, and has done his utmost to collect them from those who should pay, using both the censures of Holy Church and other means, but that these people are rebels and, despite excommunication, as is on record in Chancery, refuse to pay any money. The Abbot has been distrained to render account in the Exchequer, and he and his house are being impoverished by distraints. In consideration of this, the King in his last parliament granted him a respite until the present parliament, and said that in the meantime he would ordain a remedy for the levying of the money. He asks that a remedy for the levying of these sums might be ordained in the present parliament, and that he might be discharged both of these sums and of the levying of them.
Nature of endorsement
The King, of his special grace, and with the assent of his council in the present parliament, has granted the supplicant respite from the sums demanded of him until the next parliament. And for the levying of the said sums in the meantime, it is agreed that the Bishop is to give the names of those who have been excommunicated to the lords of the franchises in which they are living, or have possessions or benefices, together with the sums which they owe the King. And letters of the privy seal are to be issued, both to the Bishop to do this, and to the said lords to levy the aforesaid sums to the King's use.
Places mentioned
Tintern, [Monmouthshire], Wales
Llandaff diocese.
Note
CCR 1392-6 p.402 is dated 5 February 1395, and may be a response to this petition. However, no mention is made of the sending of the names of the excommunicate to the lords of the franchises, and the response to the previous petition sounds very much like that to SC 8/143/7126, so this petition may in fact be from the parliament of January 1393. Or it may be from some other parliament entirely - as the related petitions SC 8/22/1074, SC 8/22/1099 and SC 8/22/1100 show, this problem continued into the reign of Henry IV.
