Description
Petitioners
Prior and Convent of Our Lady of Southwark.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
[Much of the right-hand side of this petition is missing.]The Prior and convent of Our Lady of Southwark state that they have pleaded against the Abbot of Westminster before the justices of Common Bench, concerning a rent of 20s from the manor of Westerham in Kent, by a fine levied in the court of Henry III between Stephen, then Prior of Southwark and Robert de Caunvyll, then lord of Westerham; of which rent they were seised until the manor came into the hands of the Abbot. The plea has continued since the time of Edward I, but [is being delayed because the Abbot has produced a charter of Edward I]. The King is asked to order a warrant to the justices [to proceed], notwithstanding the charter.
Nature of endorsement
It is said before the council that the Prior has previously had an allowance elsewhere for the said rent.
Places mentioned
Southwark, [Surrey]

Note
From the content, this petition is clearly from the reign of Edward III, and from the fact that the latter stages of the plea described here seem to have taken place in the reign of Edward II, probably from the early years of that reign.
