Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/142/7097
Date
[1431-? 1438]
Description
Petitioners
John Scarburgh (Scarborough), esquire and Anne Scarburgh (Scarborough) his wife, executrix of the testament of John Snypston, and Nicholas Bolthorp, citizen and vintner of London, executor of the testament of John Snypston.
Name(s)
Scarburgh (Scarborough); Scarburgh (Scarborough); Bolthorp, John; Anne; Nicholas
Addressees
Commons of parliament.
Occupation
citizen and vintner of London
Nature of request
The petitioners state that Anne and Nicholas are being hindered in their execution of the testament of John Snypston by Alice, wife of Geoffrey Dallyng, and executrix of his testament, who is refusing to pay them their share of the price of some woollen cloth bought jointly by John and Geoffrey, and afterwards sold to Richard Mawfeld. As they can have no remedy at common law, they ask the commons to ask the King, with the assent of the lords and by authority of parliament, to give the Chancellor authority to summon Alice, and anyone else whom he finds necessary, before him in Chancery at the petitioners' suit, and to examine them on this matter; and then to proceed to judgment and execution at his discretion, as reason and conscience demand.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] Let it be delivered to the King.[On dorse] It is to be done as is requested, after the justices have been called to examination.
Places mentioned
London.
People mentioned
John Snypston, citizen and vintner of London
Geoffrey Dallyng, citizen and vintner of London
Richard Mawfeld, fishmonger of London
Alice [Dallyng], wife of Geoffrey Dallyng, and executrix of his testament.
Note
John Snypston was still alive on 9 February 1431, as can be seen from a recognizance made by him on that date (CCR 1429-35 p.109): so the petition must date from after this date. It would seem to date from before 29 July 1438, when Nicholas Bolthorp was appointed deputy at Bordeaux to the King's chief butler (CPR 1436-41 p.185). A note on the guard further suggests '? 1435' as the date, but gives no evidence for this.
