Date
[? c. 1319]
Description
Petitioners
Henry Spigurnel and Sarah Spigurnel his wife.
Name(s)
Spigurnel; Spigurnel, Henry; Sarah
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
[This petition is badly damaged, with much of the right-hand side missing, and the sense is unclear.]Henry Spigurnel and Sarah his wife request grace and a remedy in the matter of certain knights' fees belonging to Sarah which were taken into the hand Edmund, Earl of Cornwall, chief lord of the fees, when she was under age, and of which he died seised. They came into the hand of the King's father after the Earl's death, and are now in the hand of the present King.
Nature of endorsement
The Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer are to be ordered that, when they have examined the book of fees, rolls, inquisitions, memoranda and other evidence in the Exchequer, they are to inform the King in the next parliament how and in what manner and when the fees contained in this petition came into the hands of Edmund, formerly Earl of Cornwall; and in the meantime the inquisitions post mortem for the aforesaid Edmund, returned in Chancery, are to be examined. And the King is to do justice.
Places mentioned
Kersinton (Garsington), Oxfordshire
Woodperry, Oxfordshire
Bereford (Barford), Oxfordshire
Whitehill, Oxfordshire
Tackley, Oxfordshire
Pusey, Berkshire
Radclive, Buckinghamshire.
People mentioned
Edmund [of Almaine], Earl of Cornwall
Edward [I], King of England.
Note
Dated on the guard to '? c. 1319' without further explanation. This would seem to agree with the hand and language. Henry Spigurnel was appointed justice of the King's Bench in 1301, and died in 1328. It is uncertain whether 'Barford' refers to Barford St Michael, or the smaller neighbouring Barford St John.
