Reference
SC 8/142/7088
Date
[? c. 1380]
Description
Petitioners
Burgesses and commons of Southampton.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
[This petition is badly damaged, and much of the right-hand side is missing.]The burgesses and commons of Southampton appear to state that for their relief they took the profits, customs and tolls of their town at farm, but have suffered so greatly from pestilence and destruction of their town, and loss of trade because of the war, that they can no longer bear the costs of this farm. They ask that they may be discharged of it, and hold their town as they did before. They also state that they were given [the farm?] to enclose their town, and seem perhaps to be asking for aid with that.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Southampton, [Hampshire].
Note
CPR 1377-81 p.448 is dated 4 March 1380. This petition seems to be related - it is perhaps slightly later? - but it would appear, in any case, to be from the early years of Richard II.
