Description
Petitioners
Prior and convent of St Dennis near Southampton.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Prior and convent of St Dennis near Southampton state that their rents and tenements in Southampton, from which they have the greater part of their sustenance, have been burnt and destroyed by enemies, and that their men are charged with finding men at arms and archers for the defence of the town, and with paying the tenths, so that they can scarcely find enough to live off. They ask that during their misfortunes they might be excused these tenths and the charge for men at arms and archers.
Nature of endorsement
With regard to their tenths, they cannot be discharged; and with regard to finding men at arms and archers, they are to wait for the response to the common petition.
Places mentioned
Southampton, [Hampshire].
Note
The writ of respite for the petitioners enrolled on the roll of the parliament of 1339 (Rot. Parl. vol.II, p.111b (no.45)), mentions that this is because their houses have been burnt and destroyed: there is mention of another respite on the roll of the parliament of 1340 (Rot. Parl. vol.II, p.114b (no.32)). This petition would therefore seem to come from the same time, or possibly slightly earlier.
