Reference
SC 8/142/7073
Date
[1333-1334]
Description
Petitioners
Adam Scankys (Schankes), burgess of Berwick-upon-Tweed.
Name(s)
Scankys (Schankes), Adam
Addressees
Council.
Places mentioned
Berwick-upon-Tweed, [Northumberland]
River Tweed.
Nature of request
Adam Scankys, burgess of Berwick upon Tweed, states that at Martinmas 1332 he took the fisheries called 'Totyngford', 'la Lawe' and 'Callet' in the River Tweed, which belong to the hospital of St Mary Magdalen in Berwick, for a term of three years, of which one year has passed. He has paid some of the money for this beforehand, and asks that he might be able to complete his term.
Nature of endorsement
They say that the Master of the said Hospital demised the said fisheries to the aforesaid Adam for the term of three years by his deed, which he has shown here to the court, paying 23 marks annually, and that one year has passed, and that he was seised from that term until he was removed by the Sheriff, and that he was in the town of Berwick upon Tweed on the day of its surrender and that he did not remise etc.He is to have a writ to the Sheriff of Berwick to deliver to him the aforesaid fisheries, to hold until the end of the aforesaid term, so that he pays the King the aforesaid rent during the term, saving each person's right.
Note
If the petitioner took the fisheries at Martinmas [11 November] 1332 for a term of three years, and one has passed, this petition must date from between November 1333 and November 1334. Northern Petitions pp.74-5 (no. 43) dates it slightly earlier, between July and November 1333, assuming that the year will elapse at the following Martinmas: the endorsement, however, seems to suggest that it has already elapsed. From the hand and the similar endorsement, this petition would seem to be contemporary with SC 8/142/7076: SC 8/142/7064 is slightly later.
