Description

Anne de Stafford, Countess of Stafford, daughter and heir of Thomas of Woodstock, Duke of Gloucester.
Name(s)
de Stafford, Countess of Stafford, Anne
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
[This petition is damaged]. Anne, Countess of Stafford, daughter and heir of Thomas, Duke of Gloucester, states that Richard II granted to her father the manor of Burstwick with appurtenances, after the death of Anne his Queen, who held it for term of life, in part compensation for £1000 annually granted to the Duke when he was Earl of Buckingham, to maintain his estate; and that he was seised of it after the Queen's death, and died seised of it. Then by a statute made in the parliament begun at Westminster in the late King's twenty-first year and adjourned to Shrewsbury, his lands were forfeited and seized into the hand of the late King. It then came into the hand of Henry IV, and the statute made in Richard II's twenty-first year was annulled in his first parliament, and the Duke's heirs restored. However, Henry IV gave the manor of Burstwick to Thomas, Duke of Clarence, from whom it descended to the King's father, and then to the King. The Countess asks that justice might be ordained for her, with the assent of the lords of parliament, and by authority of parliament.
