Reference
SC 8/141/7049
Date
[1399-1413]
Description
Petitioners
Richard Spencer.
Name(s)
Spencer, Richard
Addressees
King and lords of parliament.
Nature of request
Richard Spencer states that John Mokkyng sued a writ of trespass against him in Surrey, returnable before the justices of King's Bench at the quinzaine of Martinmas, 18 Richard II [1394], and that process was sued on this until Richard was condemned to pay £20, for which he was imprisoned in the Marshalsea: wrongly, as he says. He asks that the record and process of the case might be brought before the King and lords in the present parliament, to correct the errors in them, and that he might be released on sufficient mainprise to make satisfaction to John Mokkyng or to return to prison if the judgment should go against him; and that John might be warned to appear to show why the judgment should not be reversed.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Surrey
Marshalsea prison, [Southwark, Surrey].
People mentioned
John Mokkyng
Richard II, King of England.
Note
This petition must date from after the quinzaine of Martinmas, 18 Richard II [1394], but the mention of Richard II suggests that it is in fact from the reign of Henry IV - and from the contents and the date of the original case probably from quite early in that reign.
