Description
Petitioners
Thomas Staunford (Stamford) of Bristol.
Name(s)
Staunford (Stamford), Thomas
Addressees
Duke of Bedford, Guardian of England and the lords of parliament.
Nature of request
Thomas Staunford of Bristol states that Thomas Norton of Bristol the elder and his sons Thomas and Walter lay in wait for him at Bristol to murder him, and succeeded in wounding him almost to death; for which they were indicted before James Cokkes, Mayor of Bristol and David Ruddok, Sheriff of Bristol, and these indictments were sent before King's Bench. In order to ruin the petitioner, and also to disrupt a formedon that he is suing in the name of his mother, Thomas Norton and his sons have presented various petitions to parliament, which are now before the council to be heard and determined. Thomas Staunford asks that, as these matters can be determined at common law, and as the petitions are not reasonable, Thomas Norton might be sent back to the common law, and that he might be dismissed by the council without being put to answer further on this, or else that he might answer these petitions by his counsel before the council, according to the course of common law.

People mentioned
[John of Lancaster], Duke of Bedford
Thomas Norton of Bristol the elder
Thomas [Norton] of Bristol, son of Thomas Norton of Bristol
Walter [Norton] of Bristol, son of Thomas Norton of Bristol
Richard, servant of Thomas Norton the elder
James Cokkes, Mayor of Bristol
David Ruddok, Sheriff of Bristol.
Note
David Ruddok was Sheriff of Bristol between 11 October 1419 and 11 October 1420, so the petition must date from after 1419. The address to the Duke of Bedford and lords of parliament shows that the petition was delivered to one of the parliaments he presided over: as that of October 1419 seems too soon after Ruddok's appointment, this petition must have been delivered to the parliament of December 1421.
